ID : 2541
« back to classes page
Afro-Cubans were among the earliest inhabitants of Ybor City. Many played significant roles in the struggle for Cuban independence waged here in the late 19th century.  The Marti-Maceo Society, founded in 1900 and still in existence, provided a vital structure for the founders and their families, who faced double challenges from Jim Crow and nativism. Descendants made many important contributions to the cause of social justice and well-being in Tampa.
