In 1952, while serving in Austria, Victor Grossman swam across the Danube into the Soviet-occupied zone of Austria, becoming one of a few NATO nation soldiers who defected to the Eastern Bloc. After the US Army dropped charges of desertion, he promoted his memoir Crossing the River: A Memoir of the American Left, the Cold War, and Life in East Germany. Mr. Grossman will share views not seen in US History books about the USSR in WWII, the separation of Germany, and media distortions during the cold war.
