The Resonance and Residue of the First African American Press, Freedom's Journal

ID : 2457
« back to classes page

In 1827 Freedom’s Journal printed the first African American newspaper, giving Black voices a powerful platform at a time when they were often silenced. More than just news, it provided a parallel narrative to the white press, preserving the real stories of African American life—stories that would have been lost without it—while challenging injustice and paving the way for future Black publications to fight for equality and civil rights.
